Free massage event a success

Did Mr. Susak look super relaxed last Monday? Here’s why: Mr. Sousak and about 35 other members of the FALA family spent Sunday afternoon, May 7, enjoying free massages. With final projects, performances and everything else that is going on in May, the FALA Volunteer Corps decided this was a good time to give everyone a treat. Volunteer Corps executive director Joe Bodin and his team organized the event held at White Dove Cafe and the Flagstaff School of Music.

Everyone who attended was given three raffle tickets good for a 15-30 minute massage from one of the 11 massage therapists who donated their time and expertise to the event. The raffle tickets also were good for a number of gift certificates for massages, other therapies and even movie tickets donated by local businesses.

The massage therapists were set up in the Flagstaff School of Music. Next door, at White Dove Coffee, between raffle drawings, those not getting a massage enjoyed a social mixer. The Volunteer Corps provided platters of fruit and veggies and excellent drinks were available for purchase from White Dove. Live music was provided by musician Terry Alan who was joined by FALA alum Marley Wall. When Terry and Marley took a massage break, FALA student Madison Morse filled in, singing and accompanying herself on ukulele.

Everyone enjoyed at least two massages. The big winners, including Mr. Susak, got three. After spearheading Empty Bowls a few days prior to the event, he was ready to relax.

“I’m just about to melt,” Mr. Sousak said after his third massage. Which one did he like the best? “They were all great.”

FALA junior Sophia Capalby said the massages were much-needed.

“It was incredibly relaxing and nice,” she said.

The winner of the grand door prize, a basket with a gift certificate for a free 90-minute massage, massage oil, bath salts and a bath sponge (a $125 value) was Maayan Cohen. Maayan attended the Relax event with her mother, Raquel Rotnes, who left the event with a smile.

“It was great,” she said.

Huge thanks go out to Joe Bodin and his team for organizing such an amazing event. One hopes it will become an annual event so more of the FALA family can enjoy an afternoon of massage, music and socializing.

“This was a lot of fun to put together,” Bodin said. “We had a really great team.”
